What do you do …? Defining my Role.

I am Jamaican and Chinese so it’s hard to respond to that question with just one word…  

I have a BSN from Syracuse University and practiced as an RN for 15 years.  I also have a Real Estate license which I obtained while working as a Cardiac RN.  I tried selling real estate but quickly realized I like the investment side better.  When I left Emory University Hospital I found myself with one paying job, which to a Jamaican is unheard of, “One Job!” lol.  Shortly after I acquired a position as an Executive Assistant for the Vice President, General Manager of Neiman Marcus, Mark Fillion.  Mark, the executive team and the entire staff at Neiman’s taught me a lot during my time there.  In addition, the network that I gained at Neiman’s prepared me for my next and most current role as the Executive Director of Kile’s Beautiful Mind 501 c 3.

Someone once said your network will increase your net worth and although I believe that to be true I am not sure if that applies when you’re working for a non-profit if your definition of net worth is based solely on financial gain.  I base my personal net worth on my definition of legacy, the impact you have on lives. 

My current job as the Executive Director of Kile’s Beautiful Mind a 501(c)(3) is non-paying due to my decision to forfeit a salary for the overall benefit of the project.  My Jamaican ancestors are probably turning over in their graves “you only have one job! And it’s not paying” lol. 

I took on the role as the Executive Director of KBM without the title at first.  The title actually came later when my role was defined.  My husband Ryan Glover founded KBM in honor of our son Kile that past in a jet ski accident when we were on a family excursion on Lake Lanier.   

In 2017, after years of KBM’s mission focusing on water safety and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the foundation not having a formal structure or fundraising outside private funding, Ryan asked me to help him with the change he was looking for but was not sure what direction to take to accomplish.  I only had two requirements to do so:

1) we change the mission to focus on how Kile lived and not how he passed and

2) We create a more formal structure to the foundation which includes a board of directors, programming, public fundraising and community partnerships.  The vision was to move the foundation focus from a homage to Kile and more about youth development in the arts.

As the Executive Director of Kile’s Beautiful Mind I have accomplished:

• An Advisory Board of Directors
• Partnership with the Alliance Theatre
• Grant to the Palefsky Collision    Project
• A Program Advisory Board
• A successful 3 Week Film Camp “Camp XI”  that took place in June of 2019 in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club Whitehead.
• Scholarships for summer creative/performance arts programs (Camp Flix, Alliance Theatre)
• Partnership with Dance 411 and SCAD to provide scholarships to both institutions.
• RiskTaker $2500 award to Cierra Metzger.
• Worked with our team to develop a Marketing and Branding strategy for the foundation. 

I hope I have summed up what I do for non-pay lol.  Actually, the outcomes I  witnessed with KBM have been more rewarding than any paying job thus far.  I see the impact made with KBM on young children and that is priceless.

 THIS JUST IN!!!! 

On November 23rd at the Whiltey Hotel in Buckhead,  Atlanta.  We had Kile’s Beautiful Mind very first fundraising gala “The Beautiful Minds Gala”.   We had a sold out room of 220 + people many of Atlanta’s notables such as  Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former Mayor Kasim Reed, Paul Judge, Kenny Burns, Tyrese, TI and many more…  Ryan and I were truly humbled but none of it would not be possible without the amazing team that Ryan called “the A team”.  We raised over 325K which exceeded our goal of $250K .   Like Hannable use to say in the tv show “the A team” I love it when a Plan comes together”…  (? “A team” shut up and google it… don’t judge me lol)
